		<description>Naomi Kawase es una directora japonesa que, m&amp;#946;s all&amp;#946; de las fronteras de su paøs, s&amp;#8804;lo ha conseguido cierta repercusi&amp;#8804;n en Francia. Concretamente, en el festival de Cannes, donde logr&amp;#8804; la C&amp;#946;mara de Oro en 1997 por ?Moe no suzaku?, estuvo nominada a la Palma de Oro por ?Sharasojyuí, y, recientemente, ha obtenido el Gran Premio del Jurado por ?El bosque de luto? (?Mogari no mori?), la peløcula que ahora nos ocupa y que se estrena el 21 de diciembre.

La directora proviene del documental, y ??se es un enfoque que se nota en toda su filmograføa, desde decisiones m&amp;#946;s evidentes como contar con operadores de c&amp;#946;mara que tambi??n provienen del documental y el empleo de actores no profesionales, hasta otras mucho m&amp;#946;s sutiles que tienen que ver con la puesta en escena o el fuera de campo.

?El bosque de luto? es una espl??ndida forma de adentrarse en el m&amp;#946;s que interesante cine de Naomi Kawase. La peløcula nos narra, con toda la parsimonia que eso requiere, la historia de Machiko, una joven enfermera en un asilo, y la de Shigeki, uno de los ancianos que allø son atendidos. Ambos personajes viven sumidos en una profunda tristeza por la p??rdida de un ser querido: su hijo, en el caso de Machiko, y su mujer en el caso de Shigeki.

En vez de cargar las tintas dram&amp;#946;ticas, Naomi Kawase apuesta por la sutileza y la sobriedad: la angustia de estos dos personajes es muy contenida y se manifiesta de forma ejemplar en la frase que Shigeki le hace al monje budista que visita al asilo: ?&amp;#9488;C&amp;#8804;mo s?? si estoy vivo??. El monje le responde con una doble pregunta: para saber si est&amp;#946;s vivo hay que saber dos cosas. La primera, y muy f&amp;#946;cil, es si comes arroz y condimentos. La segunda, m&amp;#946;s diføcil, es saber si experimentas sensaciones.

A partir de ahø, el destino de Machiko quedar&amp;#946; unido al de Shigeki: un døa, durante un viaje en coche, el anciano escapar&amp;#946; hacia el bosque en busca de la tumba de su mujer, y Machiko lo perseguir&amp;#946;. Comienza un viaje de dos døas en el que los personajes tendr&amp;#946;n que sentir, que recuperar sus vidas anuladas por el dolor.

La sutileza con la que Kawase filma su relaci&amp;#8804;n es magnøfica: todo son actos cotidianos que esconden un poderoso subtexto. Todo son elegantes met&amp;#946;foras, como la del røo que se desborda mientras el anciano intenta cruzarlo. Machiko le implora, llorando, que no cruce, que el peligro es muy grande. Una vez Shikegi desiste, abraza a una desconsolada Machiko mientras le dice ?el røo nunca volver&amp;#946; a su fuente?. Una met&amp;#946;fora tan sencilla como eficaz sobre la aceptaci&amp;#8804;n de la muerte.

El estilo visual de Kawase es, asimismo, muy acertado. Una peculiaridad de esta directora es su trabajo con el fuera de campo: todos los sonidos comienzan antes de que podamos descifrar cu&amp;#946;l es su fuente; los personajes reaccionan ante cosas que no hemos visto. Es la c&amp;#946;mara en mano, con su inquietud de documental (aunque para nada mareante) la que nos va descubriendo la realidad que nos rodea. Y me parece la mejor opci&amp;#8804;n para una peløcula que nos quiere contar el redescubrir la vida, y que alcanza la excelencia en su emotiva ? e igualmente sutil ? escena final.

Si Imamura, en ?La balada de Narayama?, nos contaba el estoico peregrinar de unas gentes hacia el aceptar su propia muerte, Naomi Kawase, en ?El bosque de luto? nos cuenta el peregrinaje hacia volver a descubrir la vida. Una sobria, elegante y emotiva peløcula que incluso dentro de sus lentitud transmite tantas sensaciones que merece la pena.		</description>

When the quartet featured on MISTERIOSO was burning up the Five Spot back in 1958, they came under attack from fickle fans and critics, seemingly for no other reason than that they weren't the 1957 model (featuring John Coltrane, Wilbur Ware and Shadow Wilson). But the wit, wonder and vigorous interplay of this quartet enlivens these performances to such a degree, it's impossible to discern what the big deal was about. This is an amazing band.

Listening to tenor virtuoso Johnny Griffin on &quot;Blues Five Spot,&quot; it's clear that for him Monk's music was almost second nature. Like fellow tenor giant Sonny Rollins, Griffin understood the rhythmic impetus behind Monk's melodies, and his penchant for witty interpolations allowed him to work a ditty such as &quot;The Sailor's Hornpipe&quot; into the conclusion of his unaccompanied chorus. Also, if you listen to how he and Monk reprise the head (and introduce &quot;Let's Cool One&quot;), you'll note the saxophonist's ability to voice his lines in such a way as to suggest different saxophone ranges, and even multiple horns when playing in unison with the pianist.

Which leads to an epic level of collective call-and-response throughout MISTERIOSO. The multi-leveled &quot;Let's Cool One&quot; has a main theme and an equally important counter-line, and during their collective improvisation, Griffin and Monk manage to maintain this antiphonal balance of preacher and congregation. Even when the band drops away for another solo Griffin break, the counter-lines and cross-rhythms keep going in the listener's mind until Monk returns with fresh abstractions and a hint of stride. Of the remaining performances, &quot;In Walked Bud&quot; and the title tune generate the most collective heat. On the former, the pianist counters Griffin's own Monkisms with sly rhythmic abstractions of the tune's main thematic accents, which Haynes echoes in his solo. And on &quot;Misterioso,&quot; Monk's trademark blues, the pianist's stark harmonic juxtapositions preclude any hint of cliched postures, as he and Griffin dig down deep into this timeless form.

By 1958, Thelonious Monk was a fixture on the New York club scene, thanks to his legendary 1957 engagement at the Five Spot. Piano, tenor, bass and drums became Monk's favored mode of instrumentation throughout the '60s, when he surfed the crest of his popularity as a major artist (cover of Time magazine), on a major label (Columbia), with some underrated bands. Recorded live at the Five Spot, the quartet on THELONIOUS IN ACTION (and MISTERIOSO) ranks with his greatest working aggregations, allowing Monk to fully explore the orchestral dimensions of jazz within a small band context.

The hard-swinging tenor giant Johnny Griffin was a key contributor. Like his soulmate Dexter Gordon, Griffin managed to traverse the differing approaches of Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young and Charlie Parker, combining them into a coherent style with the brawny blues power of Chicago tenor men such as Gene Ammons. With his fervent technique, magisterial sound, opulent harmonic command and keen sense of humor, Griffin's unbridled melodic inventions were a continual source of inspiration to Monk.

&quot;Light Blue&quot; is just that, an elegant, jaunty little dance, while &quot;Coming On The Hudson,&quot; with its enigmatic head and dissonant bridge, points to the future directions of Monk's spiritual son, Cecil Taylor. On a remarkable version of &quot;Rhythm-A-Ning&quot; bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik's burly sound and open harmonic conception keep things in motion, as Griffin soars above it all with intricate rhythmic lines. Monk's stabbing little phrases are an antidote to Griffin's complexity, as he works his way into a stride-flavored harmonic cycle before allowing his inventions to melt into Malik's charging lines and fiercely melodic drum solo.

And on &quot;Evidence&quot; the drummer is clearly inspired by the tune's rhythmic stops and starts; at times his phrasing suggests Monk's contrasting thematic motifs or the rhythmic counterpunches of brass and reed sections. Griffin begins at full throttle, seemingly enunciating every chordal nuance--he temporarily releases the pressure gauge with demure references to &quot;Skip To My Lou&quot; and the tune's antecedent, &quot;Just You, Just Me&quot;--while Monk's terse response suggests guitar phrasing.

These five tracks, recorded in the 1950s and reissued in 2006, feature Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins--two of the era's most progressive musicians--on the stand together. The interplay between Monk's skeletal, idiosyncratic, yet strangely logical playing and Rollins's full, rich tone and adventurous harmonic explorations complement each other beautifully on both standards (&quot;The Way You Look Tonight&quot;) and Monk originals (&quot;Friday the 13th&quot;). &quot;Friday the 13th&quot; is the highlight of the set, featuring plenty of stretching out from Rollins, Monk, and French horn player Julius Watkins. This is a fine addition to any Monk and/or Rollins collection.

Feature 	Description

Media Browser support (Mac OS X 10.4.x and higher only) 	Many Mac OS X users have found Apple's iLife Media Browser very useful and we have received many requests to include the same feature in NeoOffice. Fortunately, the generous people at Karelia Software have developed the iMedia Browser and we have integrated their iMedia Browser into NeoOffice. Once you open the Media browser by clicking on the new Show Media Browser toolbar button or selecting the new Tools :: Add-ons :: Show Media Browser menu, a floating window will appear from which you can drag your images, movies, sound files, or links directly into a NeoOffice document.

Native floating tool windows (Mac OS X 10.4.x and higher only) 	Previously, many NeoOffice floating tool windows such as the Styles and Formatting and the Color windows looked and behaved like document windows. Also, other floating tool windows such as the Bullets and Numbering and the Table windows looked and behaved like Windows floating tool windows. But starting with this release, all floating tool windows in NeoOffice will be native floating tool windows. This means that they will look and behave like floating tool windows in most other Mac OS X applications. They will have the small window titlebar, all of the floating tool windows will float above the document windows, and when NeoOffice is not the active application, all of the floating tool windows will automatically be hidden until NeoOffice becomes the active application again.
Magnify and swipe trackpad gestures 	Starting with some of Apple's recent Mac laptops, the trackpad supports magnify and swipe gestures that were first seen in the iPhone. Starting with this release, Mac laptops that have a trackpad that supports these new gestures will be able to zoom the content in their document using the magnify gesture and will be able to move up or down a page using the swiping gesture.

Horizontal scrollwheel support 	Previously, NeoOffice only responded to vertical scrollwheel events and only in document windows. Horizontal scrollwheel events were not handled and neither horizontal nor vertical events were handled when a popup menu or window was displayed. But starting with this release, NeoOffice handles both horizontal and vertical scrollwheel events and handles both events in all popup menus and windows.

QuickTime video support (Mac OS X 10.4.x and higher only) 	Previous releases of NeoOffice did not support display of video files in documents and only supported playing a video file's soundtrack. But starting with NeoOffice 2.2.3, NeoOffice can display any QuickTime-compatible video files in your documents. Please note that protected sound and video files (such as those purchased through iTunes) are not supported as Mac OS X will only allow protected files to be played in the iTunes and QuickTime Player applications.
Menus available when no documents are open 	Previous releases of NeoOffice had only a very minimal set of menu items available if no documents were open. But starting in NeoOffice 2.2.3, menus are now available even when no documents are open. This new feature allows users to access some of the frequently used menus such as the Recent Documents and NeoOffice Help menu items that previously were not accessible unless you opened a document first.

Import images from scanners and cameras 	A new menu - Tools :: Add-ons :: Paste Image from Camera or Scanner - has been added. Selecting this new menu allows you to directly import images into NeoOffice from any device (such as digital cameras or scanners) that Apple's Image Capture application supports. If you have any devices attached to your machine that Image Capture recognizes, selecting this new menu will display the Mac OS X Image Capture dialog. Using this dialog, you can import an image from any of the recognized devices into your current document. In addition, the imported image will also be copied to the system clipboard so that you can paste additional copies of the imported image in NeoOffice or any other application.

Command-clicking on window titlebar 	In most Mac OS X applications, whenever a previously saved document is opened, a small icon will appear in the window's titlebar. Command-clicking on this icon will display a popup menu that lists the file name and the folders that the file is in. Clicking on any of these items will open the Finder.

Mac OS X Leopard grammar checking support (Mac OS X 10.5.x only) 	In Mac OS X 10.5.x, Apple added grammar checking support for a small number of languages. NeoOffice takes advantage of this new Mac OS X feature and so we have added several new menu items in the Tools :: Add-ons menu. These new menu items allow you to use Mac OS X Leopard's grammar checker to check the grammar and recommend corrections for your document's selected text or your entire document. Please note that at this time, Mac OS X's grammar checker only supports English.
Handles Most Microsoft Office 2007 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Files 	NeoOffice includes the ODF Add-in for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The ODF Add-in is an open source project that makes it possible for NeoOffice to open, edit, and save most files in the Office 2007 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint formats. This feature is not available in current Mac versions of Microsoft Office and will not be available until Office 2008 for the Mac is released.
Handles Most Excel VBA Macros 	NeoOffice includes the Excel macro support developed by Novell's ooo-build project. The ooo-build project is an open source project that continually develops feature enhancements to OpenOffice.org		</description>

Featuring three takes of two originals from a quintet date with Sonny Rollins, plus three originals and a standard from a quintet date with drummer Art Blakey, MONK rounds out the pianist's output for the Prestige label. At this time Monk was prevented from working New York clubs due to the suspension of his cabaret card; given that fact, the palpable joy of these sessions is miraculous.

Monk's tart transformation of &quot;Smoke Gets In Your Eyes&quot; employs a canny dissonance and bent note to set up the horns' entrance, by which time he begins a harmonic vivisection of the tune. As the horns toll away, Monk parodies the melody with trills, hammered tones, jagged ascending arpeggios and cascading scaler passages. His solo begins with witty echoes of a bolero, as he gradually creates a fresh harmonic ecto-skeleton for his melodic variations, concluding with provocative open chords.

Monk creates dissonant, harmonic boxcars and badgering rhythmic passages behind the horns on &quot;Locomotive,&quot; concluding with some of his favorite trademark runs. His chording behind trumpeter Ray Copeland's fluid solo and Frank Foster's elegant lines add up less to a &quot;comp&quot; than fresh thematic contrasts, which he expands upon in his own solo, as Blakey runs rhythmic interference. &quot;Hackensack&quot; is a wonderful riffing blues line, with tart intervallic horn accents, and Monk's unexpected open spaces inspire taut interplay from Blakey, concluding with a slick double-time passage.

Of the selections with Rollins and French horn innovator Julius Watkins, &quot;Let's Call This&quot; is another lyric line with a slightly convoluted release (reminiscent of Monk's tongue-twisting &quot;Four In One&quot;). Rollins' solo is relaxed and focused, as he takes lazy arpeggios and gradually introduces complex rhythmic notions. And the theme of &quot;Think Of One&quot; pivots around a single note, as Monk builds tension through the accumulation of harmonic details, gradually deconstructing consonant chords into fractured dissonances during his own solo passage.
