DESCRIPTION:
Will Smith works in the military as a scientist trying to find a cure for a world killing virus. The story starts out showing him in a New York City abandoned the past 3 years, with him apparently being the lone surviving human. The other survivors are humans who were turned into rabid zombie-like creatures by the virus (grey, bald, fast, and hungry for blood), but they only come out of the dark underbelly of New York when the sun is down. Otherwise the UV rays burn them up. The movie also splashes in some back story showing how Will got to his current spot.
The atmosphere of an abandoned NY City going back to the wild (deer hunting in Times Square, etc.) is quite well done, I think. As well as genuinely scary moments generated by the current popular trend of unexpected/lightning fast appearances of the scary dudes with subwoofer thumping noise accompaniment. The noise scares you as much as the visual, I think. These moments are enhanced by the fact that there is no music soundtrack in the background (at least for most of the movie, if not all of it - isn?t that right, Pixel?), so much of the movie involves a great deal of silence, watching Will do his thing with no dialog. You find yourself bracing for the next moment of ?in your face sound attack?.
Will spends time with his dog trying to find a cure for the zombie vampires, even though they would kill him in a heart beat if given the chance. Will Smith does a great job portraying a man who is slightly off his rocker with the knowledge of being one of the only surviving humans, and only having a dog and zombies for company for three years. There is good humor sprinkled in despite the situation.
